Alcova, Wyoming.

With the Fourth of July less than a week in our rearview mirror, I created a panoramic view of Wyoming’s Independence Rock. On a chilly day in October, we stopped at the rest area near Alcova on our way to visit friends in Wyoming. In the distance, a large rock outcropping stands as a historical landmark and a prominent feature along the Oregon, Mormon, and California emigrant trails during the mid-19th century. Rising above the prairie, the outcropping provided a well-known reference point for travelers on the long and arduous journey westward.

The name “Independence Rock” originated from a group of fur trappers who camped and celebrated Independence Day near the rock on July 4, 1824. Thousands of emigrants subsequently camped at the foot of the rock, carving their names and messages into the granite, essentially turning Independence Rock into a giant message board for those traveling the Oregon Trail.

Today, Independence Rock is part of the Independence Rock State Historic Site, managed by the Wyoming Division of State Parks and Historic Sites. The site features a footpath that circles the base of the rock, interpretive exhibits detailing the history of the trails, visible wagon wheel ruts, and the numerous emigrant inscriptions etched into the rock. Visitors can hike on the rock, although touching or stepping on the inscriptions should be avoided as they are fragile. About the photo: I selected two pictures of parts of the outcropping from my Samsung S23U to create a panorama. I could have used the camera’s panoramic mode to generate an image wide enough to capture the entire rock while we were at the site. Still, I prefer to let Adobe Lightroom Classic stitch two separate photos together as I’ve found stitching provides a better chance of a distortion-free panorama.

I then sent the image to Luminar Neo for minor tweaks in the Develop module to reduce clipping of the highlights and blacks. I also tweaked the Enhanced AI tool to redistribute light between the foreground and sky. For a close-up pixel-peep in 2K HD on my Flickr site, click on the image.

Niagara Falls, New York.

Regular readers may recognize this series of images as part of a photo challenge I hosted in April. I thought I would focus specifically on this journey and how the photos were altered. We knew we’d get good and wet when we visited Niagara Falls. From the American side, we took the Maid of the Mist boat. We then visited the Cave of the Winds attraction. To get the close-up views at Cave of the Winds, you descend on an elevator, walk through a tunnel, and venture outside. Wooden walkways, decks, and stairs built on several levels lead us closer, higher (and wetter), to the best viewpoints at Bridal Veil Falls.

Despite its name, the Cave of the Winds is not a cave anymore. It was initially a natural cave behind Bridal Veil Falls, discovered in 1834. Visitors were even able to walk behind the falls at one point! However, the cave collapsed in 1954 and was subsequently dynamited due to safety concerns.

Once down, we were outfitted in ponchos before embarking on the series of wooden walkways that led to the “Hurricane Deck.” The image above was captured from one level below the Hurricane Deck. I walked up to that deck, which is just 20 feet (6m) away from the cascading waters of the falls. It was so wet there that I wasn’t comfortable taking my phone out to capture an image at that vantage point.

About the photo: The opening is the final image that resulted in an experiment comparing Photoshop’s AI generator with the AI tool built into Luminar Neo. The original image is below:

The original image included the very left edge of the Hurricane Deck and the intrepid person willing to take the pounding. He was taking a photo, so his camera was hopefully better protected from water than my cell phone.

The final image came from Photoshop’s Generative Fill tool. After selecting the structure and person on the right and clicking on the Generative Fill tool, I was presented with three possible choices. The choice I picked generated a rock in the area where the staircase was removed.

I then loaded another copy of the original image into Luminar Neo. After selecting the decking, I clicked on the Gen-Erase button. Neo only creates one version at a time, so if I didn’t like the “first draft,” I could just select the same area again. There is no need to return to the original image, as the software will simply redo the highlighted area. Neo’s engine appears to be slower than Photoshop’s tool. Still, since both tools are server-based and the image must be uploaded to the cloud, modified, and downloaded to the workstation again, the difference may be simply in Internet traffic at the moment of processing. One thing I found interesting is that the Neo image is very similar to one of the other choices made by Adobe’s Generative Fill. I can only go from memory since I didn’t keep that choice.

Once the image was turned into an altered reality, the processing was precisely the same. I used Neo’s Enhanced AI to highlight the contrast while still hanging on to the mist in the air. Then, I used the Structure command to add sharp contrast to the bigger water droplets. Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.

I can’t say much about this giant gorilla, as Internet searches came up either empty or with references to other gorilla sculptures. An attraction at the Taino Bay port area, the gorilla appears to be a bandstand or platform for performances of some kind. As you can see from the photo, the structure is quite close to the cruise ship dock that was enlarged from the cargo ship pier in 2021 to add additional cruise ship moorings to the city.

Nearby, about a 15-minute drive from Taino Bay, the Amber Cove Cruise Port began welcoming cruisers in 2015. Amber Cove is a Carnival property and we were scheduled to visit there via the Carnival Magic in 2018, but bad weather in the area caused Carnival to drop the port stop that week. We would not stop in Puerto Plata until January 2023 via the Norwegian Escape.

About the photo: I captured it on my Samsung S20U. The gorilla sculpture and the Norwegian Escape made a nice composition featuring a popular photo stop at Taino Bay. I had to wait a bit while other cruisers took selfies while standing next to the gorilla.

I cataloged the image in Adobe Lightroom Classic and used the program’s cropping and alignment tools to level the horizon and remove extraneous stuff at the image’s edges. I exported the file to Luminar Neo for development tweaks, mainly the Smart Contrast tool and Enhance AI to adjust the exposure. The jpeg file didn’t need any more than that, so I uploaded it to my Flickr site in 2K HD and posted it here as a 1K image. Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida.

Fort Jefferson, located in Dry Tortugas National Park of Florida, is a massive former coastal fortress built on a small island, and it is a landmark piece of U.S. history. The Park presents some challenges to visit. Dry Tortugas is located about 70 miles (113 km) from Key West, the westernmost island in the Florida Keys chain. Despite the travel issues, the fort is a popular tourist destination accessible by ferry from Key West, seaplane, or private boat. I will feature a Travel Tuesday post with more details about the journey and the fort. Consider today’s post a teaser.

This behemoth fort is constructed with over 16 million bricks, making it the biggest brick structure in North and South America. Only a few other US forts, like Fort Monroe in Virginia, surpass its size. It was a significant challenge to bring building materials to the island, so it’s understandable why Fort Jefferson was never fully finished or armed despite nearly 30 years (1846-1875) of construction. I will save the rest of the history lesson for the upcoming Travel Tuesday post.

The fort’s construction involved many supporting brick walls, and accessibility from one section to the next required many openings, each supporting the roof structure above with a brick archway. Some of the archways were only wide enough for a person to use, while others allowed men and equipment easy access throughout the fort. I was presented with many opportunities to capture images featuring repeating arches.

In addition to the doorway arches, there are outlines of arches on the floor. They are the remnants of tracks used by wheels at the back end of cannons that were pointed toward the seaside gun ports. The gun ports are not visible due to the short wall arch supports on the right.

About the photo: Looking north from the east side of the hexagonal fort, the interior fort walls were mainly open and offered minimal obstruction, allowing sunlight to flood the interior along nearly the entire wall. Using my Samsung S23U, I captured the image of receding arches. After cataloging and cropping within Lightroom Classic, I exported the image to Luminar Neo. From there, I did very little processing. I lowered the highlights in the Develop module. Then, I used Enhance AI to increase the contrast and add additional light to the darker foreground due to the wall on the left in this section. Scottsdale, Arizona.

Scottsdale Arizona is a place where Jaguars, Mercedes, and Porsches are as common as traffic cones. But during our winter stay, on a recent visit to the grocery store, we parked near the most unusual Porsche I’ve ever seen. It reminded me of a poem written in 1895 by Gelett Burgess. Here is my version:

I’d never seen a purple Porsche,
I never thought I’d see one,
But I can tell you anyhow,
I’d rather not own me one.

OK, I’m no poet so I tender my apologies to Mr. Burgess and his Purple Cow.

About the photo: I captured the image with my Samsung S23U with a quick snap, no pro mode, just a jpg image. An SUV was parked directly in front of the purple Porsche, so I cropped the image tight. Then I tried to use the content-aware healing brush in Lightroom in an attempt to remove the remaining rear of the SUV. It left a weird purple blob in front of the car. I then exported the image to Photoshop and found that using Generative Fill, that tool wanted to create a different type of vehicle in front of the Porsche. All three images put three different vehicles there. I’d left the Generative Fill dialog empty, instead of indicating I wanted the selected area erased.

I then decided to use Luminar Neo’s Gen-Erase module on the image to see how it would do. Since the Gen-Erase module needs the image opened directly from Luminar Neo instead of being exported from Lightroom, I exported a second copy of the image for safety and opened that image in Neo. Instead of using a selection tool like Adobe products, Neo uses a mask. I masked the “offending” SUV and clicked the Gen-Erase tool. The SUV all but disappeared. Gen-Erase created an extension to the building on the right edge of the image and brought the far right light pole down to the ground where the AI tool completely imagined a parking island and entrance to the building.

The mask I created wasn’t quite perfect and there were a couple of artifacts of the SUV directly in front of the curve of the front fender of the Porsche. I used the standard Erase tool in Neo to touch up the fender, and the pavement and remove a couple of pieces of litter on the ground.

If you click on the opening image, it will link you to the 2K HD version of the final photograph. Using Pinch-Zoom on your device, you can enlarge the area in front of the building. You’ll see that it’s really an artist’s representation of the building’s facade and plantings. Yet when viewing the entire image, the AI creation is all but unnoticeable in the background.

I finished the image by increasing the contrast, structure, and vibrance from within the single Enhanced AI tool and imported it into Lightroom Classic for the addition of the watermark and filing in my master catalog.

Scottsdale, Arizona.

As I write this, we are within ten days of returning home to Fargo. I scheduled the post for publication about a week after returning to our Fargo condo. Longtime readers of this blog know that I have always marveled at Arizona sunsets, and for the decade or so that we wintered in Buckeye, I shared many sunset photos with you, dear reader.

Near our rented condo, there’s a connection to a more than marathon-length improved trail (think concrete with a painted center line). It was our pleasure to walk along this trail on our evening walks, taking different directions to explore. On any night, dog walkers, bikers, skateboarders, scooter riders, and others would pass us, or we would meet them as we passed in the opposite direction.

Our usual walk was over a mile and a half (about 2.5 km). Leaving the condo complex, we would head for the trail intersection, then walk the concrete path until it intersected with a path that led to Mountain View Park. From there, we would connect with the sidewalk that led us back to the condo.

Not wanting to walk in the dark, we would be sure to be home before sunset, but we got a late start one night. As we were leaving the park, I looked westerly toward the elementary school next to the park. The sun was already below the horizon, and the last vestiges of the golden hour would soon disappear.

About the photo: I reached for my Samsung S23U and snapped a picture of the disappearing colors. The image turned out to be a pseudo-panorama. The standard 16×9 aspect ratio included some utility structures in the foreground. I simply cropped the foreground to eliminate those distractions in Adobe Lightroom Classic and then shipped the image to Luminar Neo for final processing. Even though there was very little noise in the ISO-80 image, I used Neo’s Noiseless extension tool anyway. I then used the Erase tool to remove a street light on the far right. I tweaked the Enhance AI tool, which slightly raised the exposure in the foreground and lightened the sky. I didn’t enhance it much as I wanted the foreground dark to not distract the viewer from the sunset colors. Click on the image above to view it on my Flickr site in 2K HD.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s theater is a popular venue for musical and theatrical entertainment. I’ve never before shared images from a performance because almost every performance is prefaced with a warning that photography and videography are expressly forbidden. On one occasion, however, not only was photography allowed, but also permission was given to share on social media. That production is the British Comedy “The Choir of Man”.

Even the opening of the play is unusual. As the audience wanders into the theater, the set features a scene from a British public house (pub). The place looks closed, with chairs on tables and the set relatively dark. About 15 minutes before the scheduled start of the show, a “bartender” shows up and starts prepping the bar for opening. Then another player comes out and starts removing the chairs from the tables and wiping the tables down. Once the pub was ready for opening, and before the scheduled start of the production, the bartender began a short soliloquy and concluded by inviting the audience to come up on stage for a beer. Many of the surprised audience members started lining up in the aisles and headed toward the stage.

If I were a reviewer, I might write something like The Choir of Man is a theatrical experience packed with energy and heart. The production is a British musical created by Nic Doodson and Andrew Kay. Set in a traditional pub with a real, working bar that includes pouring drinks for the audience!

The musical features several multi-instrumentalist singers who take various places in the pub and a three-piece band that is at the top of the stairs. The music is a lively blend of pop, rock, and folk songs, arranged specifically for the show. A few audience members are picked at random to join the group on stage to improvise as customers in some of the numbers.

As a reviewer, I might go on to say that the uplifting and infectious atmosphere is guaranteed to have you tapping your feet and singing along. The play is a celebration of male friendship and connection, exploring various emotions and experiences through song. The diverse range of musical styles, from Queen and Paul Simon to Adele and Sia, ensures something for everyone’s taste.

The unique theatrical setting blurs the line between audience and performers, creating a sense of camaraderie. But enough about the play, other than to say that I give it two thumbs up or five stars, and it received a nomination for the British theater’s Olivier Awards in 2022. One of the advantages of cruising is that entertainment like this is included in the cruise fare.

About the photo: During the show’s pre-open, most of the audience members lined up to get a beer from the pub. Taking advantage of permission to photograph the performance and with most of the audience in line, I stood up from my seat to capture the image with my Samsung S20U cell phone. Back home again, I imported it into Lightroom Classic to catalog and crop, and then I exported it to Luminar Neo for simple tweaks of exposure, highlight reduction, and Enhanced AI. The last thing I added to this image is a slight tweak of the Magic Light tool. This feature in Luminar Neo added small starbursts to all of the stage lights at the top of the image. First, please accept my wish for a Happy Easter to those who celebrate the most important and joyous holiday in Christianity.

For last week’s Lens-Artists Challenge on Thursday, I shared some photos from a behind-the-scenes tour of the Norwegian Bliss hotel facilities. The challenge was about photographing people, and it seemed appropriate to feature those people whom cruisers seldom see, those who work below the public decks. To keep that post short, I omitted several photos. I will share them today to provide more context about our tour below the public decks. Sorry for the unusually long Cellpic Sunday post.

Our visit to the allergen-free kitchen started with a description of how the kitchen works to prepare food for people who have food allergies. Behind the chef, some holiday decorations were getting ready for table displays. These images were captured on November 30, 2023.

On our way to the kitchen, I spotted two nearby elevators. I noticed the small placards just above the floor buttons. One elevator is used to carry allergen-free meals up to the restaurant levels, and the other is used to carry dishes with food waste from the restaurants back down for disposal.

Our tour was in the morning, so we saw the laundry crew just starting the day’s laundry for bath towels and washcloths. By the end of the day, this pile will be folded, stacked on carts, and ready for distribution to the room stewards on the following day.

These are the smallest washing machines we were shown. They would never keep up with that mountain of towels daily. Those machines were large and behind a fenced area, so I couldn’t get a decent photo of them. They were loaded from the side opposite where we were, and the carts were weighed to allow the washers to be loaded to maximum capacity with each cartful of laundry.

We didn’t get to see any of the crew’s leisure areas, and rightfully so. Crew members have their own restaurants and bars, and we happened to walk by the entrance to the crew gym. During their time off, they sometimes can check out and spend some shore time at the various ports of call.

Organ Stop Pizza isn’t your typical pizza place. It was founded in 1972 by William P. Brown, a real estate developer passionate about theater organs. The concept was unique: pizza and live music from a massive Wurlitzer organ. Brown’s first restaurant opened in Phoenix.

The organ in the Phoenix restaurant originally belonged to Grauman’s Hollywood Egyptian Theater, adding a touch of Hollywood history to that restaurant. The success of the Phoenix location led to the opening of a second Organ Stop Pizza in Mesa in 1975. This Mesa location boasted a Wurlitzer organ from the Denver Theater, which was expanded to 23 ranks for its new home.

When William Brown retired, the Phoenix location was sold, the organ purchased by a couple who put it in their own home in Illinois, and the building demolished. The Mesa Organ Stop also changed hands. Longtime employee and manager Mike Everitt and his business partner Brad Bishop took ownership. One of their top priorities was to enhance the restaurant’s famous pipe organ. Over the years, they meticulously acquired rare pipes and percussion instruments. This dedication transformed the Mesa Organ Stop into the home of the world’s largest Wurlitzer pipe organ. The website linked above has a complete history of the organ and its ongoing modifications. The restaurant is popular not only for the entertainment but also for the food. Their website notes that 300,000 visitors enjoy a varied menu of both food and music. We ordered a large pizza and drinks for less than $40 US; the entertainment was free.

I would be remiss not to provide a link to a video of this musical wonder in action. Several YouTube videos feature the large theater organ, including this one featuring The Phantom of the Opera. We enjoyed various musical genres during our meal, including motion picture themes, oldies, and more current tunes. The place was crowded with family-style seating at long tables. We couldn’t find any open seats on the main floor, but plenty of seating was available upstairs.

We were given a numbered receipt after ordering and paying for our food and drinks. Number boards in the main seating area lit up when each numbered order was ready. It was a bit of a wait for our order, but the time went fast while we listened to the music. We had no complaints about the quality of our pizza. We will visit again before leaving Arizona and return to Fargo in a few weeks.

Long Beach, California.

Last November, we traveled to Long Beach, California to board the Norwegian Bliss for our Panama Canal sailing. Being extra cautious, we arrived two days early in Long Beach to avoid missing the cruise due to flight cancellations or other issues. That gave us some extra time to make a special visit.

I grew up in Long Beach. My father passed away there while I was a senior in high school. It had been many years since I left the city, and I hadn’t been back to visit the cemetery where my parents were buried. The extra day meant that I could visit Mom and Dad. We piled in a taxi and got a ride to the cemetery.

On our way back from the gravesite, I spotted a 1948 Chevrolet, its lines gleaming under the California sun. A jolt of recognition shot through me. It was the same year and model of the car Dad had driven when we first arrived in Long Beach in 1956. Of course, I knew it wasn’t his car. Dad’s Chevrolet had been weathered, its paint faded, its engine bearing the scars of the miles on our journey west. This one was pristine, a collector’s item, a ghost from the past brought back to life. Yet, for a fleeting moment, I allowed myself to believe. To imagine that somehow Dad’s car had found its way here and was waiting patiently for his return.

I walked over to the car and took a couple of cell pics. I glanced at the tail lights for a year date stamped in the plastic to confirm it was a 1948 as the 1947 had the same basic body style. Unfortunately, the taillight lenses were aftermarket products, so there was no year molded into the lenses to help me tell for sure.

I called the taxi driver’s cell phone to ask him to pick us up again and we waited in the shade by the main entrance for the taxi. In the meantime, two gentlemen walked up to the car. It was obvious one of them was the owner. He opened the trunk and put something inside. From their dress and the nearby groups of people, I could see they were there for a funeral that had just concluded.

Being the crass individual that I am, I approached the two men and told them of my Dad’s ownership of a similar 1948 and I wanted to confirm the year. It is indeed a 1948. After telling him my story, the man surprised me by asking if I wanted to drive it (for old-time’s sake.) I looked over at the car, remembered the “three-on-the-tree” manual transmission, and realized that it had been many years since I had driven a car with a stick shift. I wasn’t about to demonstrate my lack of skill to the owner of such a fine vehicle. I thanked him profusely for the offer but declined with a request that I be allowed to share the photos and the story on my blog. If you’ve read this far, you know his response.

About the photos: I call the opening photo “Dad’s Smiling from Heaven”. With the sun backlighting the image, a couple of sun rays filtered across the image. Those who know I use Luminar Neo for processing might surmise that they were created with Neo’s sun ray generator. They were not. The light leaks were an artifact of that specific exposure. When I saw the light leak on the screen of my Samsung S23U, I went to the other side of the car for a second image. The two images were captured in the UltraWide mode so that I could be close to the car and get a full side view. That accounts for the slight distortion from front to rear. If I were to use the normal wide-angle mode, I’d have had to stand further back and would have ended up including parts of the cars parked next to the subject, blocking the view of the car’s profile.
