After our 14-day sojourn from Los Angeles to Miami via the Panama Canal, I have a small collection of cellpics that I will be sharing over the next few weeks. I found it interesting that I saw a large number of cargo ships in and near the canal that were completely enclosed and did not have those cargo boxes stacked high on the deck. This ship, the Toronto, is registered in Malta, owned by Wallenius Wilhelmsen Shipping. It, like many of the others I saw, is a vehicle carrier. The ship is 656 ft (200 m) by 104 ft (32 m), and is small enough to go through the original canal locks. Ships like this are giant garages packed full of automobiles and rolling equipment of all types. Most of the ships like this one we saw have a large ramp at the rear allowing vehicles to be driven onto the ship and packed as close as possible to each other. Each vehicle is then tied down so it can’t bump into the vehicles sitting next to them should the water get rough.
About the photo: This ship was passing through Lake Gatun, the large body of water that sits midway between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean. I captured the image with my Samsung S6 cellphone and processed it using Lightroom and Luminar 3. The rule for Cellpic Sunday is simple. The image must be captured on a mobile device. In most browsers, you can select the image to get a higher resolution view.
