Cellpic Sunday – The Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum

Although we spent two days in New York City before taking the Carnival Magic to Canadian waters, we didn’t stop at the Intrepid Museum. The museum is docked at Pier 86, right next door to the Carnival dock; we didn’t know the museum existed when we entered the city. When we boarded the cruise ship on Saturday, we noticed the aircraft carrier, the planes, and the submarine Growler.

The museum’s centerpiece is the USS Intrepid, a World War II-era aircraft carrier that served in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters. Visitors can explore the ship’s decks, including the flight deck, where planes once took off and landed. The museum also houses a collection of restored aircraft, including fighter jets and helicopters, and exhibits on naval aviation history.

In addition to the Intrepid, an enclosed area on the carrier deck features the Space Shuttle Enterprise. Docked across the pier, the guided missile submarine USS Growler invites visitors. Visitors can learn about the history of space exploration and submarine warfare through interactive exhibits and displays.

About the photo: Upon our return from Canada, we again docked at Pier 88. I stepped out on our balcony to capture the view of the aircraft carrier with my Samsung S23 cellphone. According to the time stamp on the photo, I took the image at 6:46 AM, and the morning light was well underway.

The processing was basic, except for some Photoshop Generative AI that removed a thin slice of Pier 88 at the extreme bottom of the photo and replaced it with water. I sent it off to Luminar Neo for Enhanced AI and called it done.

I never have a specific topic for this feature, and the only rules are that the photo must be captured with a cell phone, iPad, or another mobile device… If you have an image from a drone or even a dashcam, that’s also acceptable.   12. Not long ago I was in San Diego on a tour of the bay. WE were gifted will cruising by the Stennis on the way out. Holy cow! It seemed like it was a mile long. Compared to he Midway Museum, the Stennis seemed twice as long.
