This week we are challenged to share images that were taken at night. I don’t have a huge collection of nighttime landscape photos, but I will share some of the few I have. Click here to view the original challenge post. I submit for your approval a collection of nighttime landscapes.
Available light with a tripod supporting a DSLR camera is not only possible at night, it’s amazing for the ability to capture low light with the tripod allowing long exposures. This photo of Lake Quinsigamond in Worchester, MA is one of my favorite night shots. It was taken with a model D5100 Nikon camera with a 6-second exposure at f/4.0 and an ISO of 800.
This abandoned motel in Whites City New Mexico recalls the glory days of road travel in the 1960s and the original motor hotels. The sign on the office says that the Pueblo Motel will be rebuilt better than ever. I don’t really know how old that sign is. The photo was taken with a Nikon D7000 camera with a 15-second exposure at F/5.6 and an ISO of 100. The large amount of available light was provided by lights in the parking lot across the street.
In the White Tank Mountain Regional Park, visitors can join a park ranger for a nighttime hike. I’ve found that if people don’t use flashlights, the human eye does a beautiful job of adapting to the only light provided by the full moon. This view is looking east toward the Phoenix metro area. The shadowy mountain in the center of the screen is the iconic Camelback Mountain, about a 45-minute drive from the photographer’s position. This shot was taken with a Nikon D5100 camera with a 10-second exposure at F/3.5 and ISO 800.

Wonderful! thank you John
I appreciate your comment, and I am happy you like my take on nighttime, Eithnea.
Beautiful night shots John.
Thank you! I really should do more… I would like to try star trails sometime.

[…] photo taken from the White Tank Mountain Regional Park on Journeys with johnbo was bittersweet. I remember spending much time there with my late husband (a native Arizonan). […]
Love that second shot John – looks like an old-time western shot from the 1800s.
Thanks, Tina. Though it looks like I applied a sepia tone, the amber colored lights in the parking lot across the street applied just enough color balance to magically tone the photo. 🙂
Love the photos, John. Especially the abandoned motel in Whites City New Mexico; it has such an eerily compelling quality.
Thank you, Kimberley. I should spend more time outdoors at night with a camera! I saw a great shot in the local online news taken of the northern lights last evening… Where was I? Sound asleep!! 😦
