The Lens-Artists Team is back from our December hiatus with our favorite image shares of 2023. This week, there is no one single host to the challenge. The entire team will be sharing the challenge topic today. You can link to any or all of our team posts.
I am looking forward to another year of challenges and responses from all of the participants in this year’s challenges. I have a few “ringers” in my selection, but I have a justification for inclusion. For example, the opening photo was captured in September 2022, but I didn’t select it for processing and publication until a year later. It finally found its way to a Cellpic Sunday in October 2023. I’m not sure why I didn’t select it sooner. It turned out well if I say so myself.
Another image from New York captured in 2022 and not published until October 2023 is this black-and-white photo of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. DxO’s Silver Efex helped to make this photo one of my favorite images.
The portrait of the macaw was captured many years ago, but in 2023, I was looking for animal portraits to experiment with a processing technique I discovered in a YouTube video. Basically, it involved bringing out the subject by darkening the background. Of the half-dozen or so images I modified, this one was my favorite.
In early 2023, we set sail on a transatlantic cruise, but rather than set sail from New York or from Florida, the usual departure points in the United States, we found a cruise that departed from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We arrived in Rio early so that we could see some of the many points of interest we’d only seen in travelogs and photographs. Probably my favorite image of Rio is this shot of Ipanema Beach at sunset. It wasn’t my finest image of the collection, but it was a destination I’d often thought I wanted to visit.
In August 2023, we visited the Sunken Gardens in Lincoln, Nebraska. These beautiful gardens are built on a former dump site. The image above is actually a two-image vertical panorama to allow me to get close for maximum detail and still feature the plants at the base of the display.
Another garden we visited in 2023 is in Brookings, South Dakota. This cottage is a centerpiece of the Cottage Garden, one of several in the McCrory Gardens. The old building is a former gas station building moved to Brookings from Lake Preston, South Dakota.
I always enjoy sharing ocean views from a cruise ship, and doubly so when they include a sunrise or sunset. Captured on our Atlantic Crossing in early 2023, I used this image in a previous photo challenge to focus on empty space. Having just set, the sun isn’t even visible and beside a small band of clouds, a freighter in the distance is the only subject.
I am happy to be back for 2024’s Lens-Artists Challenges and I am looking forward to seeing everyone’s favorite images from 2023. For pixel peeping and photo metadata, you can check out this collection in 2K HD on my Flickr site here.

Great choices John, even though you cheated a bit. I’m glad you included your “taken in 2022 but processed and posted in 2023” images. They were stunning. Happy New Year!
Thanks, Anne!
😊
Great pictures! I have more or less the same photo of Ipanema, this sunset over Morro Dois Irmãos is so striking. I also love the moment when the people on the beach applaud the sun’s departure every evening.
It was a magical moment!
That’s a killer image of NYC, John, and who doesn’t see Ipanema just like that in their imagination? Take me there, hon!
I would love to return!
I love the scarlet macaw , I would have visited few of those places as you have captured them beautifully 😊
Thanks, Ritva!
A great selection John! I love the opening shot of New York and like you am surprised it took you so long to process and share it 😀 Thanks for the idea of stitching together a vertical panorama. That’s not something I’ve tried and it seems to be very effective.
Are you hosting this theme? It’s not clear from your post that you are, but I don’t see a link to anyone else as host.
Actually, we are all hosting the challenge this week. Thanks for reminding me I forgot to include links. I think probably the team has posted now. I’ll edit to add the links to the others.
Thanks for clarifying John 🙂
Sarah, for the beginning of the year we are all posting simultaneously. A link to all of us is at the bottom of the pages if you’d like.
Thanks for clarifying Donna. I could only see a link to John’s Flickr page, hence my confusion!
Ok.
Amazing images you picked here. The Ipanema view is classic!
Thanks, Egidio. I’ve been a fan of that beach since Astrud Gilberto in 1964. >grin<
Always a pleasure to see what you come up with John. Great images to narrow your favorites. I remember the macaw! Still love it today. You had a great year to share with us! And canna lilies are one of my favorite flowers so I am glad you included them.. On an old dump site? WE SO need more of that ! Happy New Year.
There you go! Similar to Butchart Gardens in British Columbia.
Thanks, Donna! I am looking forward to seeing everyone’s post for this first challenge of the year.
Really beautiful pictures
Thanks! We visited some really photogenic places last year.
very great
The view from Ipanema Beach is just mesmerizingly beautiful 🙂
Thanks, Hammad! It was mesmerizing indeed!
[…] Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: Favorite Images of 2023 […]
I really like your New York shot (doesn’t everybody?). My next favourite is the mawcaw – it looks stunning.
Thanks!
Lovely choices John. I especially like the first one the New York image
Thank you! We visited some beautiful places this year.
Terrific post John – your opening NYC image is especially stunning! Also loved the little former gas station garden, so clever. As you know our Reader section is not working correctly so I’m adding a link to my post here https://travelsandtrifles.wordpress.com/2024/01/06/lens-artists-challenge-281-favorite-images-of-2023/
Seriously! Did all the L-A hosts post at the same time??? I can barely deal with all of them at once. 🙂 I liked that your photos take us all over the US and throughout much of the world. Thanks for including something from my home state of Nebraska, something I’ve rarely seen. Looking forward to seeing you both again in the not-to-distant-future?
All of the hosts were scheduled to post at the same time, but it seems WordPress is having problems with the Lens-Artists tags again.
We are looking forward to being in Scottsdale in mid-February. Hope to see the blogging gang again.
My Reader showed almost everyone posting in a row so it seems to have worked. Why the change from usual?
Just trying something new to start this year!
It’s a bit overwhelming to have everyone at once because everyone has such great photos that it’s hard to keep coming up with compliments that aren’t too much the same. 🙂
I understand!
That NY skyline is incredible, It may very well be my favorite also.
Thanks, Dawn.
You were well traveled in 2023. Gorgeous photo John 😀
Thanks, Cee!
Beautiful golden shot of NYC. The macaw, too, what color! And Ipanema, what an amazing site.
Thanks, Dan!
I would love to return!
John, you can totally sell prints of that Ipanema beach shot.
Can’t wait for more of your work for this year! I have a feeling it will best be spent for all of us traveling and taking stock of the beauty in our lives and world.
– Archer
Thank you for the nice compliment, Archer! I am looking forward to another year of sharing photos.
Beautiful pictures!
Thanks, Marcia!
I love the opening photo and your macaw is beautiful
Thanks, Nora!
Beautiful photos, John! If I remember correctly, the little house is a post office, isn’t it!
Thanks. It was a gas station. I’m not sure if they use it for anything other than a nice display piece for the garden, Miriam.
Oh, gas station, John! Yes, at least it’s not a regular residence that I remember. It’s cute, though.
Your opening photo is stunning and I also love your Ipanema one. A wonderful post, John. Can’t wait to see where 2024 takes you.
Thanks, Sofia! We are looking forward to being away from home until April, but most of that time, we’ll be staying put in a warmer place than North Dakota. >grin<
All great. But I can’t hep voting for the parrot!
Thanks, Margaret. It turned out so much better than I expected when I was done. Modern digital processing tools are amazing.
I love the Macaw…even if you cheated a bit there! The New York opener is a stunner, John. The ending sunset really makes me think of your faiblesse for cruises – well chosen!
Thanks, Ann-Christine. I only have one cruise scheduled for 2024… gotta fix that. >grin<
😀
Great photos, John (love the macaw). Being a bear of very little brain, I’m still confused about the requisite links, so I’ll pinback to here, if I may.
A pingback is absolutely fine! Thanks!

These are excellent choices, John! Happy travels in 2024, and looking forward to seeing more photos from you travels.
Thanks, Amy!
I love how you explain your processes for editing your images, John! You’ve chosen a wonderful selection to share. Love the macaw image–so rich in color and texture! Looking forward to more in ’24!
Thanks, Terri! There is so little work (compared to years ago) in editing digital photos, and my tweaks are minimal as a result. The macaw is one of the more complicated edits I’ve done in a long time.
[…] for visiting my last post and my favorites of this year, and I am looking forward to reading your journey […]
[…] restricted myself to selecting my favourite photos from among those which I took with my phone. That was something I found myself doing more often […]
hello john,
that’s a great selection of images you’ve chosen for the challenge theme i really like them, especially the 1st, 2nd and 4th.
here is my entry for this week, https://wp.me/pfnz9O-3h.
many greetings robert
I like these. The sunset at sea is as brightly coloured as the macaw!
As you said, your favourites of a year can change from year to year as you try out new things. My (current) specials from last year are here: https://anotherglobaleater.wordpress.com/2024/01/08/a-few-special-photos-from-the-year-404-me/
You have a nice gallery there. Happy 405!
