This week, guest host Jude of Cornwall in Colours challenges us to look closely at our subjects for exciting textures. From Jude’s post: “And although I have chosen a very personal Cornish theme for my take on the subject you can choose anything you like including art, nature, food, textiles, architecture, or even common objects around the home.” You can read Jude’s entire challenge post here.
For my opening photo, I chose to share the image of a small stream in Glacier Park, Montana. It features two water textures, smooth pools, and the turmoil of a small waterfall. In addition, the texture of the surrounding rocks adds a structural element.
In Glacier Bay, the texture of water compressed by thousands of years into an icy face creates a fascinating pattern. At some point, given the world’s warming temperatures, this glacier face will fall into the sea below (if it hasn’t already.) I captured this image in 2014.
Near the Glen Canyon Dam at Page Arizona, the terrain is composed of large sandstone areas. It is fascinating to me how the wind and the occasional rainstorm in the desert have shaped the easily sculpted sandstone.
Another image from near Page, Arizona, really demonstrates the power of wind as it has sculpted a wave structure in the soft sandstone. I never tire of looking at the amazing textures found in this part of the desert.
Plants have their own interesting textures and in autumn, the fall colors add an extra dimension to the texture of the leaves of deciduous trees.
My final image is a manmade texture. This grill covers the radiator of a vintage Rolls Royce. Click on any of the images above to view it on my Flickr site, or scroll through the entire album of images here.
Thanks again to Jude for guest hosting this week’s challenge. Next week, Tina provides a challenge for the community of Lens-Artists. If you’d like to join in the fun but aren’t sure how to get started, you can find the details here.
For those who celebrate the holiday, Happy Thanksgiving!

Beautiful images John. I have been lucky enough to have visited the region around Page and was absolutely bowled over by the rock formations. The geology is fascinating. Thank you for these incredible textures.

[…] Lens-Artist Photo-Challenge John:…Textures […]
[…] Textures is the prompt for today’s Lens Artists Photo Challenge and my picture is one I took at this year’s Day of the Dead celebration in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. This is a picture of an altar that has all kinds of textures: wood, metal, glass, food, bones, rocks, fruit, flowers, wire, straw, water, pictures, to name just a few. The altars are made in order to remember those loved ones who have died, but their lives are remembered with love.See more wonderful pictures of textures at https://photobyjohnbo.wordpress.com/2022/11/24/lens-artists-photo-challenge-226-textures/.
