Braga, Portugal.
In 2020, Lynn and I planned a 50th-anniversary cruise from Rome to Southampton during our anniversary month. The Pandemic ended that dream temporarily, but in 2022, the trip became a reality, from Southampton to Rome. This was our first European trip, so we planned more inland excursions rather than just basic port stops.
Of course, we saw plenty of castles and churches. You can expect my Cellpic Sunday posts to feature images from our trip, and we start off this week with our excursion to Braga Portugal, and a tour of a pilgrimage site that dates back to the 14th century. Built high on a hill outside of the city, the site presents wonderful views of the city below from several viewpoints.
The current sanctuary was constructed over about 50 years and completed in 1834, and a large staircase leads the faithful to the church and courtyard. The site has a 600-year history of additional features built on the grounds and in 2015, Pope Francis bestowed the title of Basilica upon the small church. At some point, I will be doing a Travel Tuesday post featuring more views of the site and its beautiful basilica.
We were lucky to get to the site when we did. As you can see in the image, it was sunny at the site, but looking over the town, ominous clouds covered the city. As we headed away from Braga, the skies opened up to a steady rain.
About the photo: I used my Samsung S20U in 108 Megapixel mode for the source image. The image in its entirety was edited via Luminar Neo instead of first filtering it through Lightroom. I am experimenting with some of the latest add-ons to Luminar, in this case, the HDR module. Neo can create a high dynamic range image from a single image with minimal fuss. I found the technique described in a YouTube video. Click on the image above to view it in 2K HD.
I encourage fellow bloggers to create their own Cellpic Sunday posts. I never have a specific topic for this feature, and the only rules are that the photo must be captured with a cell phone, iPad, or another mobile device… If you have an image from a drone or even a dashcam, that’s acceptable as well. The second rule is to link your challenge response to this post or leave a comment here with a link to your post in the comment. Oh, and, you don’t have to post it on a Sunday.

Beautiful shot, John. I’ve never been to Braga, funny that!
I’ll post mine later.
Thanks, Sofia. Beautiful place to visit.

Lovely shot John! I’ve been to Portugal but not to Braga yet. I guess I have to put it on my list 😀. My entry is here https://flightsofthesoul.wordpress.com/2022/11/20/face/
We also visited a nearby town, Guimaraes. Some beautiful architecture there.
Lovely click with HDR effect which I liked a lot.
Thanks, Philo!
You are welcome John.

It was worth the wait. Thanks, Robert.
What a magnificent view, John. The storm clouds really enhanced the lighting in your image. Breathtaking! Here are my brown cell pic musings this week: https://secondwindleisure.com/2022/11/20/sunday-stills-monthly-color-challenge-leather-and-shades-of-brown/
I am on my iPad sitting in an airport and I cannot login to your page to comment, though I could LIKE it and see the pics.
I am always a fan of those beautiful autumn colors.
We are on our way to Albuquerque for Thanksgiving with family.
I have trouble using my mobile for commenting too. Thank you! Enjoy your Thanksgiving, John.
John, so glad you were still able to make your anniversary trip!

Hi! I am on my iPad, traveling for Thanksgiving, and I can’t pull up your post. I will look forward to checking it out when I get my laptop out, probably tomorrow. Thanks, in the meantime, for the compliment.
No hurry, John. Enjoy.
John, I can’t wait to see more of your photos from Bom Jesus and Braga, in general. We were there a few years ago (also a cloudy day), and I couldn’t get enough of that magnificent staircase.
Bragg is a beautiful place, and the BOM Jesus is its crown jewel!

That is an unusual picture because of the clouds. It looks like shady should be the color of the picture instead of sunny. Great catch, John. It sounds like a wonderful anniversary trip. 🙂 Congratulations a couple of years late!
You are probably right that I could have changed the profile. It is a JPG file, though, so it doesn’t allow much flexibility in post like a RAW file does.
I like it the way it is, that is what makes it unusual. I don’t think changing the profile would have changed the fact that you had sun and clouds in the same picture. I have some barn pictures like that, and they are some of my favorites. 🙂
Photography is all about the light, and the interpretation, isn’t it?
Indeed it is, yet light is not what I’m thinking when I take the picture. I’m thinking – “Gee that’s a gorgeous … I think about light when I process which is why I’m an amateur photographer! 🙂
