Page, Arizona
This week we are challenged to share images that demonstrate texture, either natural or man-made. From the post: “This week, share a texture found in an unexpected place. It could be made of natural materials, as in these images, or with man-made objects.” You can read the entire challenge post here.
The opening image of this week’s challenge submission is a sandstone monolith found near an observation area on the east bank of the Colorado River just south of the Glen Canyon Dam. On our way back to North Dakota a couple of summers ago, we decided to check out some of the northeast parts of Arizona. Stopping first at Page, location of the Glen Canyon Dam, and then on to Monument Valley on the Navajo Reservation, we had the opportunity to view new and interesting landscapes. New to us, of course, considering nature has been sculpting the landscapes for millennia.
Much of the terrain around Page is composed of sandstone. A geologist would identify sandstone as a “clastic sedimentary rock“. In plain English, rock that’s composed of fine grains of sandy material bound together with a natural cement. Wind and water erosion creates interesting and often spectacular textures in the relatively porous sandstone base. I submit for your visual consumption a small gallery of sandstone images taken near the Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River at Page, Arizona. Great images! Have been to Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell – very impressive scenery. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks. I appreciate the compliment. I am looking forward to future visits to Antelope Canyon and some of the other sandstone attractions in the northern part of Arizona!
Excellent photos of this beautiful area!
Thanks!
We only spent the night there. Some time we will have to plan a longer stay.
[…] To see more images of these watershed accomplishments, the links below will take you to my original blog posts on two of these major construction projects. In the near future, I will create a post focusing on a larger gallery of images taken at Glen Canyon Dam. In the meantime, I featured some images from the area around Page, Arizona in a previous photo challenge here. […]
