60 miles west-southwest of Punta Abreojos, Mexico.
This is being written in early December as we are preparing for two weeks of back-to-back cruises out of San Juan, Puerto Rico in January. Edit on 2 January 2022: Everything didn’t go as planned, Omicron got in the way, and we’ve postponed our trip to the Southern Caribbean for now. We will make our first visit to these islands later in the year when Omicron settles down. Thanks to Norwegian Cruise Lines for making a reschedule with no penalties possible so close to sail date.
About the photo: For this week’s cellpic, I chose an image captured on the Norwegian Bliss captured in October 2021. It was late on the second day of a two-day cruise. Lynn and I were walking on one of the upper decks at the stern of the ship. I happened to notice the shade-covered windows and looked in. From our high vantage point, I could see that the main dining room was a couple of decks below and that these high inward-slanting windows looked down into the dining room. The shades allowed enough light to pass through for me to capture this moody appearance of the room, almost empty of diners at the end of the day’s dinner service.
The image was captured with my Samsung S20U, pushed to ASA 2000, f/1.8, and 1/10 second due to the dark screen in front of the lens. Tweaking in Lightroom and Luminar AI brought through the dim light the geometry of the tables already set for the morning’s breakfast guests.
I encourage fellow bloggers to create their own Cellpic Sunday posts. I never have a specific topic for this feature, and the only rules are that the photo must be captured with a cell phone, iPad, or another mobile device… If you have an image from a drone or even a dashcam, that’s acceptable as well. The second rule is to link your challenge-response to this post or leave a comment here with a link to your post in the comment.

Lovely point of view with vanishing point effect.
From the top the tables appear diamond shaped.
I guess it’s candle or bulb giving the glow in the centre.
As you rightly put it, mostly the hall looks empty.
Moody indeed!
I think the symmetry of the “diamonds” as well as the moodiness of the scene attracted my attention.
Those lights are LED “candles” on each table. I am sure the staff is waiting for the last of the guests to finish their dinner so they can turn them off for the evening.
Thank you for the information John.
Appreciate.
A great shot, John. I’m using my iPhone a lot more for photos these days so so must join in with your challenge.
I’ll be looking forward to seeing some of your cellpics. “The best camera you have is the one you have with you.”

Decided to join in this week John 🙂 Love your photo

Moody describes it just right. What lovely symmetry and so is the colour purple. Wonderful indeed!
Thank you. This was truly an example of noticing something that I could have just as easily walked by. If it were not for that cellphone in my pocket, I’d have missed the opportunity for an interesting image.

The future is indeed ours. Great theme.
Stupid pandemic! Better to be safe than sorry at this point, John. I think you are brave to be stuck on a boat with sick people, though 😉 Great shot of the dining room and a compelling image of how lonely the tables must be without people to sit at them now as cruises are paused. Here is mine just published https://secondwindleisure.com/2022/01/09/sunday-stills-the-future-is-ours-2/
Indeed. I have been reading how cruise lines are handling covid patients, and their protocols for keeping people safe. Frankly my concern is placed on airports and airplanes and cities. In any case, it’s time to take a pause again. Hopefully the summer will be better.

Interesting shot. Here’s mine
Thanks! Stop by again when you have a chance to share a favorite cellpic.
Beautiful image! We decided to cancel our December’s cruise…
Thanks. As much as we were disappointed, we made the same decision.

Thank you John! Enjoyed joining your challenge.

Cool capture! Here’s mine, https://tblsite.me/2022/01/09/cellpic-sunday-january-9th/
I’ve already checked out your post and commented there. I can see you’ve got a lot of snow in your neck of the woods. 🙂
It was the colour caught my eye first. What a strange colour for a restaurant I thought before I started looking for a reason. A good capture, you obviously keep your eyes peeled for the unusual.
In the early days, I struggled to find things to photograph. Now, I’ve found it much easier to see the potential for an interesting image. Must be the practice. >grin<

Those lovely dinners – the highpoints and draw of cruises. Cruising is such a great way to see a lot of territory quickly and relax and enjoy the journey. Just be prepared to put on a few pounds! My entry will come embedded with my WQW post on Wednesday. As usual, I’m double dipping, and even taking Tina’s advice in doing so! 🙂 Have a great week. 🙂
That’s a great shot. I like the lattice of tables (too close for comfort these days, though) and most of all the colours.
I have a phone camera close up for this week. Unfortunately, a barrel distortion is something one has to live with if one also wants a wide angle with the same lens. Maybe I should invest in one of the multilens phones. Do those work better for close ups?
Wow, such a precise layout 😃 Here’s mine: https://jezbraithwaite.blog/2022/01/10/double-dipping-cellpic-sunday-lapc-181-and-weekend-sky/

Nice picture of the cruise! Thanks for sharing. Here is mine:
You have a very nice collection of sky images in your post. In the last couple of years, our fall trips have been plagued with hazy and smoky skies from all of the wild fires.
Thank you. 😊 Last year’s fires definitely affected our skies worse. I had to evacuate twice from them. My daughter said our fire smoke reached everyone in Arizona, too.
Wow! I know it’s been a rough year for people living near fire danger areas. There seem to be so many more areas at risk than in earlier years.

[…] On our first walk to the beach, I wore knee high rain boots and had only an inch to spare as I waded parts of the Discovery Trail out to the beach. Water in the foreground of the above photo covers what is usually bare ground where folks cut across on foot or bicycle. This image fits with John Steiner’s challenge of cell phone (or other such device) photos only. https://photobyjohnbo.wordpress.com/2022/01/09/cellpic-sunday-227 […]
