Poinsett Cemetery

Arlington, South Dakota.

Located in eastern South Dakota, Lake Poinsett (pronounced Pahn-set) is one of the largest lakes in the state. The lake was named in honor of Joel Poinsett, the former United States Secretary of War from 1837 to 1841. At the south end of the lake, across Highway 81, on 196th Street, you will find the Poinsett Cemetery. The cemetery was established in 1872.

This summer’s family reunion was held at a relative’s house on the shore of Lake Poinsett. As we passed the nearby cemetery, I noticed the irony of the dead-end sign on the road that leads to the entrance of the cemetery and then terminates a few hundred yards further on.

About the photo: The image was captured with my Samsung S23 and edited entirely in Luminar Neo. The terrain in front of the sign dropped sharply, and since I was lacking a step ladder, I could not stand at the same elevation as the base of the sign. I held the phone high above my head and captured a vertical image. In Luminar Neo, I cropped it square putting the bottom of the image at the base of the sign. After some basic tweaks of exposure and structure, I used the Enhance AI tool to bring out the blue in the sky. You can click on the image above to view it in 2K HD via my Flickr site.

I never have a specific topic for this feature, and the only rules are that the photo must be captured with a cell phone, iPad, or another mobile device… If you have an image from a drone or even a dashcam, that’s acceptable as well. The second rule is to link your challenge response to this post or leave a comment here with a link to your post in the comment. Oh, and, you don’t have to post it on a Sunday.

  12. Lovely colors John! And the irony is spot on 👍. I get the same feeling whenever I am in the tram here in my town, whose last stop is – the cemetery! Luckily I get down one stop before that 😬.

  19. hahaha What a sense of humor someone has- must be you! 🙂 Very well done, John. Thanks again for your help. I haven’t had a chance to implement anything yet, as I’m in Scottsdale doing my doctor tours. When I get home, I can concentrate once again on other things! 🙂
