This week, Amy asks us to fill our challenge response with rivers. She uses quotes from “A River Runs Through It” to amplify her own images. Amy writes, “Ann-Christine, Patti, Tina, and I look forward to seeing your photos of rivers running down mountains, through valleys, along plains where you are or you have traveled, and we also love to read your stories.” You can read her entire challenge post here.
In the image above, it’s hard to believe that the small stream in Arizona’s Canyon de Chelly, Chinle Creek, could have created a canyon that rises some 1000 feet (305 m) above the river bed. From a standpoint of sheer beauty, the canyon rivals the Grand Canyon as one of the most beautiful in the country (at least in my opinion.)
Using my zoom lens, and then cropping, I was able to capture an image of two men standing on a footbridge that crosses Chinle Creek.
Of course, I couldn’t leave out the Grand Canyon as a place where a river runs through it. This view of the Grand Canyon was enhanced with Luminar’s sky replacement as that evening sunset was blocked by dull gray clouds. I took some liberty to provide an alternate reality to create this composite.
Regarding this small stream, I could name ten states when I say, “This river runs through it.” Of course, in most of those states, it is somewhat larger than it is here where this photo was taken in Minnesota’s Itasca State Park. This river, from it’s headwaters at Lake Itasca terminates at the Gulf of Mexico near New Orleans. If you haven’t guessed by now, it’s the mighty Mississippi River.
In the northern great plains, here is another of many rivers that run through the region. This river flows north, bordering the states of Minnesota and North Dakota. The Red River of the North then flows through Manitoba, Canada and eventually empties into Lake Winnipeg. I captured this image on the Minnesota side of the river with my drone during one of my first practice sessions in learning to use its camera.

Beautiful choices John. I especially liked your opener – it’s a place I’ve never heard of. Considering the number of times I’ve visited my brother in AZ and COLO I cannot believe we’ve not ventured out there. Just added it to my list!
The canyon, near the town of Chinle, is only a short drive from Monument Valley. Plan to spend a couple days exploring this. Northeast corner of Arizona.

Sometimes “augmented reality” makes for a more dramatic photo. The dull gray sky in the original left the photo with a lot to be desired. Thanks!
