Lens-Artists Photo Challenge – Cool Colors – Blue and Green

Welcome to the new look around here. I hope you like the new style. With the new block editor in WordPress, I started having issues with our old theme. The new theme is “guaranteed” to solve all my block editor issues… but we’ll see. In any case, I submit for your review this week’s Lens-Artists Photo Challenge.

Our challenge this week, from Tina Schell, features the cooler side of the color wheel, blue and green. She writes, “This week we are returning to the color wheel and its cooler members, which include blue (primary) green (secondary), and blue-green or blue-violet aka purple (tertiary). A visit to the web on the subject will take you deep into the emotions said to result from exposure to these and other colors. For this week’s purposes, let’s simply explore the many ways the cooler colors appear in our world.” You can read her entire challenge post here.

For my opening image, I found an image of a damselfly captured on a relatively recent trip to Winnipeg’s Fort Whyte Alive nature center. If you find yourself in or near Winnipeg, you couldn’t find a better place to spend a summer day.

For my challenge-response, while I am “allowed” to include all of the colors in the cooler side of the wheel, I decided to focus on basically two-color images, mostly blue and green. That’s in part because I have a kazillion images to choose from with blue sky/water and green terrain. OK, I’m taking the easy way out… so sue me. 🙂

The image above was captured from an overlook at Waimea Canyon on Kauai, Hawai’i. The view looks to the west toward the Na Pali Coast. When we arrived, it was fairly cloudy, but as the day went on toward mid-day, the low clouds finally burned off.

At Mahogany Bay on the island of Roatan, Honduras, a shipwreck dominates the harbor. The ship ran aground at Dixon Cove and the loss apparently worth recovering so the shipwreck remains an interesting viewpoint for cruise ships entering the harbor. OK, so the ship isn’t blue or green, but the image certainly favors those colors.

As one who owns a Ford Mustang, I can’t resist featuring a much classier model Mustang than mine. This early model is cool in more ways than the blue and green color scheme. This GT-350 was on the auction block at Barrett-Jackson in 2018.

Just south of Fargo, our favorite park, Orchard Glen, gives us great views of the Red River on a summer day. There is plenty of green on the shoreline with the river reflecting both the blues and greens in the image.

For my final image, I feature a photo of Mount Rainier as viewed from Reflections Lakes that I recently shared in a post documenting our visit last fall to Mount Rainier National Park in Washington state. As always, you can click on an image to enlarge it for a better view.

  1. Always wonderful John, and the new theme looks great! Your Hawaii photo took me WAY back to our last visit there. We did the helicopter ride thru the canyon which was fabulous but since then too many helicopter tours have crashed so I’m glad we did it in our younger, more daring days. In Canada the helicopter tour we were due to take to the glaciers crashed the day before we were scheduled to go! I know you’re a pilot and would argue the safety, and we’ve been fortunate to have done many such adventures so I think I’ll leave that to you from here out!! Loved all of your images and am glad you had a blue and green classic car – pretty snazzy!

    • Truth be told, I feel safer in an aircraft than I do when driving on the I-10 through the Phoenix metro… just sayin’ >grin<
Seriously, aviation has risks that people would rather not be concerned with. I truly understand that emotion. For example, I know a few sky divers. They accept that risk set, something I would never do.
As I get older, there will come a time when I will no longer accept the risks of flight… but I am not that old yet.

    • I am struggling right now with photos of the Grand Tetons all captured in the smoke and haze of those western wild fires. I know that of which you speak. You are welcome to put a link to my post. If you prefer, this link features only Mt Rainier and opens with that shot from Reflections lakes. https://photobyjohnbo.wordpress.com/2021/04/06/mount-rainier-np/
Thanks for the comment on the new theme. I don’t know if I am completely happy with it yet, and I may still make another change before it’s all said and done.
After checking the link to your article above, I like the looks of your theme. I wonder which one you chose. My new theme is Apostrophe 2.

      • I’ll check out that other post for sure. My theme is Nisarg and I paid for the Pro version to get more customisation, but the free one is pretty good I reckon. I don’t think I’ve come across Apostrophe 2 (or 1 for that matter!) – there are just so many out there, aren’t there? The other one I liked was Maxwell but I found Nisarg easier to customise to my needs 🙂
